Our History

War Veterans' Home Mt Lawley
War Veterans' Home Mt Lawley 1961

The War Veterans' Home Mt Lawley was certainly the greatest single project achieved by the RSL in Western Australia.

The Home was set on 11 and a 1/2 acres of land, secured from the State Government in 1959, within an area previously known as the Scadden Pine Plantation.  It was a desirable parcel of land at that time, due to its accessibility to the growing city of Perth.

Built at the cost of £190,000 and the buildings were officially opened by Premier The Hon D. Brand M.L.A., on Saturday, 11th March 1961. During the course of his remarks on that occasion, Premier Brand described the culmination of the RSL's efforts as a "job well done" and offered his congratulations concerning the design, standard of building and the very adequate equipment.

RSL WA claimed with justifiable pride, that the War Veterans' Home was comparable with anything of its type in the Southern Hemisphere, and looked forward with confidence in its ability to maintain the exceptionally high standard already set.

Menora Gardens is now proudly established on this land, where the original Home once stood.
